Question 1

When should I book international flights for the best prices?

Accepted Answer

For optimal pricing, book international flights 2-4 months ahead for popular destinations, 3-6 months for peak season travel. Flexibility with travel dates can save hundreds of dollars, and midweek departures are typically cheaper than weekends. Use price alert tools to track fares.

Question 2

What documents do I need for international travel?

Accepted Answer

At minimum, a valid passport for 6+ months beyond your return date. Depending on your destination, you may also need a visa, vaccination certificates, return ticket, or proof of accommodation. Check country-specific requirements well before departure. Some countries offer visa-free entry or e-visas.

Question 3

Can I book a round-trip ticket to different cities?

Accepted Answer

Yes, these 'open-jaw' tickets allow you to fly into one city and return from another. This is great for multi-country trips and can be more cost-effective than buying separate one-way tickets. Select the 'multi-city' or 'multi-destination flight' option when searching.

Question 4

What's the difference between a layover and stopover?

Accepted Answer

A layover is a short connection (usually under 24 hours) where you remain at the airport. A stopover is a longer stay (24+ hours) where you can exit the airport and explore the city, often without additional fare cost. Some airlines offer free or cheap stopover programs with provided tours or hotels.

Question 5

How much luggage can I bring on international flights?

Accepted Answer

International economy typically allows 20-30kg checked baggage (often 2 pieces of 23kg each for transatlantic routes) plus 7-10kg carry-on. Business class usually permits higher limits. Always verify your specific airline and route allowances. Excess baggage can be expensive.

Question 6

Do I need a transit visa for stopover countries?

Accepted Answer

Some countries require transit visas even if you don't leave the airport; others offer visa-free transit for short connections. Check requirements for all countries you'll pass through, not just your final destination. Rules vary based on your nationality and layover duration.

Question 7

What if I miss my international connecting flight?

Accepted Answer

If both flights are on one ticket, the airline will rebook you on the earliest available flight at no charge. If using separate tickets, you're responsible for rebooking, which is another reason to allow enough connection time. Travel insurance can cover costs related to missed connections.

Question 8

Can I earn airline miles on any ticket?

Accepted Answer

Most paid tickets earn miles, though deeply discounted fares may earn less. Award tickets booked with miles typically don't earn additional miles. Join airline alliances to earn across multiple carriers. You can also earn miles from hotel partners, car rentals, and credit cards.

Question 9

Should I buy travel insurance for international trips?

Accepted Answer

Highly recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covers medical emergencies abroad, trip cancellation, lost baggage, and flight delays. Medical coverage is especially important as many health plans don't cover international care. For expensive or non-refundable trips, insurance provides valuable peace of mind.

Question 10

How early should I arrive for international flights?

Accepted Answer

Arrive 3 hours before departure for international flights. Allow extra time during holidays, peak travel seasons, or if checking multiple bags. Late arrival risks missing flights as check-in closes 60 minutes before departure. Immigration and customs processes can be time-consuming.

Question 11

Can I use my mobile phone during international flights?

Accepted Answer

Most airlines now offer Wi-Fi for purchase on long-haul flights. Enable airplane mode during takeoff and landing. Consider purchasing an international data plan or local SIM card at your destination for connectivity. Some airlines offer free messaging packages.

Question 12

What happens if my international flight is cancelled?

Accepted Answer

Airlines must rebook you on the earliest available flight. If delays exceed certain thresholds, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the route and circumstances under various passenger protection laws. Airlines often provide meals, accommodation, and transportation for lengthy delays. Travel insurance can cover additional costs.
